With a membership of over 400 painters, sculptors and photographers, the Art Society of Old Greenwich is the largest in Connecticut. It was founded in 1927 by Robert Wesley Amick, a noted Old Greenwich painter who special- ized in Western landscapes. From the beginning the ASOG's purpose is to facilitate the circumstances where profession- al and amateur artists equal opportunity to show their work under the same roof. That objective of the Art Society remains to this day. Membership Open to All Artists Working in any Medium The Society welcomes all area artists, working in watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastel, sculpture, graphics, photography, drawing, and mixed media. Dues are $20 per year. Periodic newsletters announce all shows and activities. For an additional $25, ASOG members and other artists may show their work on the internet for one year. The Society charges commission on sales not. The YWCA receives commissions on sales at Gertrude White Gallery. Eleven Shows Sponsored Each Year One of the distinctive aspects of the Art Society is that members are offered a variety of occasions and locations to exhibit their work. The Society sponsors shows at seven different locations. Ten shows are judged; one, juried. In judged shows, all works submitted qualify for prizes. In the juried show, the judge selects all the work. 1. Annual SideWalk Show Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich, September. This tri-state attraction invites residents to purchase art for their own collections from 500+ paintings that appear in the show. 2. Purchase Award Show at Gertrude White Gallery in November. ASOG pays $500 for the work chosen by a deserving local public service agency. 3. Holiday Show at Gertrude White Gallery in December enables the membership to show work for purchase during the holiday season. The annual meeting is held at this festive event. 4. WinterFest the Winter Arts Festival is a Buffet Dinner at the Riverside Yacht Club in January. 5. Founder's Show honors the founder of the Art Society, Robert Wesley Amick in a show at the Gertrude White Gallery during February. 6. High School Art Student Awards Show Student portfolio winners receive over $1,500 in prize money. 7. Visual Poetry Show held at Greenwich Garden Education Center in April. This show celebrates the advent of Spring. 8. Spring Art Show at the Gertrude White Gallery includes award winning high school student work. 9. Photo Sculpture Show at Bendheim Gallery in June attracts work by photographers and sculptors from the tri-state area. 10. Shades of Summer - Held in Stamford's Westfield Court Gallery in July, this show features new work by the membership. 11. Juried Show is held each July at the Flinn Gallery in the Greenwich Library, Putnam Avenue, Greenwich. The juror is a painter who commands national recognition. Generous Cash Prizes and Ribbon Awards Presented Annually Every year, the Art Society presents approximately $3,000 in cash prizes and show awards. In addition, local business donate over $5,000 in prize money and gift Certificates to artists participating in the September SideWalk Show. All ASOG Shows are judged by prominent regional artists. Show Entries Judged by Respected Regional Artists The Board of Directors of Art Society of Old Greenwich recognizes the importance of attracting outstanding artists to judge our shows. This policy insures that all awards are based on the highest standards of artistic quality.
